Lab Notebook Best Practices

  • Use a digital lab notebook that is backed up in the cloud.
    • Currently we use Benchling.
  • Assign each experiment an ID number. Often you'll have to repeat an experiment and tweak the conditions or reagents many times before it is perfect. Giving each attempt an ID number can help you describe the differences between the procedure each time.
    • Consecutive numbering is fine: exp1, exp2, exp3.
    • You could also tag your numbers if you have very different projects and want to track them separately: Proj1.1, Proj1.2, Proj1.3
