Working with _Arsenophonus nasoniae

Arsenophonus nasoniae is symbiont of the wasp, Nasonia vitripennis, gut microbiota that can be cultivated in vitro. The isolation and characterization of the particular strain used were carried out by Dr. Robert L. Gherna and are described in depth in here.

In vitro culture conditions

Plate Growth

Arsenophonus nasoniae DSMZ Strain: 15247 (type strain) can be cultured at room temperature; although recommended culturing temperature found in literature is 28°C. It grows robustly on agar plates after 3-5 days on the following media:
  • Brain Heart Infusion Agar

This particular strain doesn't show any antibiotic resistance to antibiotics at E. coli concentrations, so all standard lab concentrations can be used when making plates.

Liquid Media

Arsenophonus nasoniae can be cultivated in the following liquid media (same general culture conditions as above, with shaking):
  • Brain Heart Infusion Media
